Students and instructors have found Knewton Alta to be a valuable tool in pre-calculus and math classes. It serves as both a homework and assessment platform, allowing students to practice what they have learned. The mastery-based system of Knewton Alta has been praised for its effectiveness compared to other homework systems. Students who need extra help receive additional support, while quick learners can complete tasks quickly. The adaptability of Knewton Alta is seen in its use in statistics and college algebra courses, where it adjusts to students' skill levels and provides prerequisite help. Instructors appreciate the analytics provided by the software, which guide future instruction and enhance the learning experience for students.

Knewton Alta is not only used in math classes but also shows promise as a learning management system for calculus programs. Professors have expressed interest in using Alta to manage their calculus courses effectively. Additionally, the use of Knewton Alta in biology units has reported a better learning experience compared to units without the tutorial program.

Especially during the transition to remote learning, students have found success using Knewton Alta. Its well-supported platform provides comprehensive help and support for both students and instructors. However, some instructors have noted that certain questions in Knewton Alta may not align with class content, requiring instructions to help students navigate these situations effectively. Nevertheless, with its adaptive question system and clear explanations for each objective and problem, Knewton Alta proves to be an invaluable resource for students across various subjects.

Adaptive Learning Integration: Many users have praised the integration of adaptive learning in the LMS, stating that it provides a valuable feature. This has been highlighted by several reviewers, who appreciate how it focuses on meeting learning standards rather than just grades. By offering a more comprehensive and personalized learning experience, this feature has received positive feedback from multiple customers.

Individualized Questioning: Several reviewers have mentioned their appreciation for the platform's use of individualized questioning. By tailoring questions to each student, this feature helps to reduce cheating and promote individualized learning. Multiple users have stated that this approach prevents students from sharing answers and encourages a more personalized learning experience.

Explanations for Mistakes: The inclusion of explanations when students get problems wrong has been widely appreciated by users. Many reviewers have found this feature to be very helpful as it allows students to understand their mistakes and learn from them. With these explanations, the platform promotes a deeper understanding of the material and supports effective progress for learners.

Lack of Clear Distinction: Several users have expressed a desire for a clearer differentiation between objectives and learning within the system, as they find it confusing. They believe that this distinction would help them better understand their progress and focus on areas that need improvement.

Limited Testing Methods: Some reviewers have pointed out that there is a need for alternative testing methods to prevent student cheating. They suggest incorporating different types of assessments or implementing additional security measures to ensure academic integrity.

Confusing Review Questions: A number of users have found some review questions to be confusing when they are not aligned with the curriculum. This has caused frustration as it hampers their ability to effectively study and prepare for exams. Addressing this issue by aligning the questions more closely with the course material would greatly enhance the user experience.

I use [alta from Knewton] in my pre-calculus class as a way for students to do homework and take tests. Right now it is only used in my class but other professors in my department have expressed interest in using it.
  • Adaptive learning
  • LMS integration
  • Focus on meeting learning standards rather than just on grades
  • Each student gets different questions so it can reduce cheating
  • Explanations are included if students get problems wrong
  • I allow students to take quizzes up to 3 times. I don't let them see the solutions until the due date but it would be nice to have the option for them to see which learning objectives they got wrong after each attempt so it would help them study.
I think any computational based math class will greatly benefit from [alta from Knewton, a Wiley brand]. It simplifies the professor's work in terms of grading while also increasing the student's ability to get real time help on homework problems if they are struggling. I like that the questions are at a deep level and not all multiple choice. If a student gets a problem wrong they get a growth mindset message of encouragement.
  • Increased the responsibility of learning for the student, gives them control over their own learning
  • Better understanding of course material
I have not used any other courseware but when making a decision I did look into a few others and meet with reps. By far [alta from Knewton] seemed like the best option for me because it was focused on students meeting standards rather than just getting a grade. I also love that it is adaptive, which many others were not. Also students get different questions so it may reduce the amount of cheating amongst them.
